The Singapore Swimming Proficiency Award (SSPA) - Flaunt Your Swimming Skills!

The Federation International Nation Association (FINA) offers the Singapore Swimming Proficiency Award (SSPA) to those individuals who are successful in four of the known swimming strokes set by FINA itself.

What Does SSPA Aim To Achieve?

Primarily, the SSPA aims to achieve the following:

  • To provide for an advanced platform after the swimmers have undergone their basic swimming and lifesaving skills in the form of the SwimSafer.
  • To enhance the professionalism and proficiency of the swimmers coming in for SSPA by enabling them to polish their skills in the 4 strokes focused upon by SSPA.
  • The SSPA students will be required to meet a certain benchmark set by the SSPA in terms of timing .
  • To increase the level of competitiveness for the incoming pool of swimmers in Singapore .
  • To enable the SSPA coaches to achieve a new level of professionalism .


What Are the Strokes Involved In SSPA?

The strokes that the SSPA will be focusing on include:

  • Backstroke
  • Freestyle
  • Butterfly
  • Relays
  • Breaststroke
  • Backstroke
  • Medley Swimming
  • Beginning and turning around including the timing

Who Are The Coaches Involved In SSPA?

SSPA ensures that only NCAP qualified and SSPA certified coaches, who are registered with the NROC are selected to train its students.

The same criteria apply to those who test the SSPA candidates- anyone falling below the said criteria would not be allowed to conduct the SSPA test or act as a coach for the students. The Those who have a level 2 according to NCAP and are at a level 3 of the technical level, are selected to test the students.


The SSPA Requirements For Freestyle

In order to make the award more competitive and perfect, the swimmers have to make sure that they do the following when swimming under the freestyle category:

  • They can swim in any style they're comfortable with.
  • They shouldn't remain under water for more than 15 meters after having started the lap or after each turn.
  • At least some part of the swimmer should be above the surface during the entire time.
  • The swimmer should be able to touch some part of his/her body on the wall on the completion of each lap.
  • The swimmer should not pull on any of the rope demarking the lanes during the race or the test run.


The SSPA Requirements For Backstroke

  • The swimmer is expected to start off and remain on the back throughout the race except when turning around.
  • Some part of the body of the swimmer should touch the wall on completion and on turning around.
  • Some part of the swimmer should be constantly above the water surface.
  • The swimmer should end the swim on his/her back.


The SSPA Requirements For BreastStroke


  • The swimmer should be completely under water as the race starts, bringing one arm back to the legs.
  • The swimmer should start off with a butterfly kick and then follow the arm to leg movement.
  • The head should break the water surface before the hand moves inward.
  • The arms should be kept at the same level as the body.
  • The hand should not move beyond the hips.
  • Both the legs and arms should move together with the feet outwards.

The SSPA Requirements For Butterfly Stroke

  • The swimmer should swim with the body on breast.
  • The swimmer should not be under the water surface for more than 15 meters.
  • There should be no breaststroke movement.
  • The legs should move together.
  • The arms should touch over, under or on the water.
